Mesothelioma Cancer: What Are The Treatment Options

posted by:

Mesothelioma cancer can be treated through different ways. But the physician who prescribes the treatment for the Mesothelioma patients thinks about a few factors before going for it. Each patient can't be treated in a similar way in case of Mesothelioma cancer.

Factors of concern

  • The first bourgeois is the age of the patient.
  • How did the cancer affect the patient and where has the cancer formed in the patient’s body? This is also an important bourgeois to be considered before deciding the process of treatment.
  • Was the patient healthy or weak before the cancer started forming in his body? A detailed history of the patient’s general health is also required.
  • How much the cancer has formed in the patient’s body and how much alteration it has already caused – this is something of great importance again.

All these factors are considered prior to the treatment of the patient. The physicians get the right direction through these symptoms and that is an essential aspect to go for the right option of treatment.

Asbestos Mesothelioma- A Deadly Disease

Asbestos is the Main Culprit behind of the Asbestos Mesothelioma
Asbestos Mesothelioma is a rare but dangerous. It caused by exposure of asbestos particles that suspended in the air. Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring silicate minerals. It’s just became strong and durable fibers that are resistant to heat and fire. Thin, long and flexible structure of asbestos fibers grants you to weave them even into cloth. So, these inherent qualities of asbestos prompted the manufacturers of industrial, automotive, maritime, scientific, building and consumer products to use it widely during 1890-1970.

Different Types of Mesothelioma and Their Symptoms

Asbestos mesothelioma affects the lining of lungs, abdominal organs or heart. Asbestos mesothelioma affecting lining of lungs or pleural membrane is called pleural mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining of abdominal organs or peritoneum. When this disease shows its effect in the lining of heart or pericardium, it is known as pericardial mesothelioma. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma are pain and swelling in abdomen, weakness, loss of weight, loss of appetite and nausea. In most of the cases, fluid accumulates in the peritoneal space. Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are continual cough, difficulty in breathing, weakness, loss of weight, loss of appetite, chest pain, lower back pain and difficulty in swallowing. Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment

Mesothelioma cancer is a disease that comes from excessive exposure to asbestos, and substances that are related to asbestos. The fibers contained in asbestos can enter the body through the skin or mouth and find its way to the blood stream or lungs. It is not simple to diagnose mesothelioma cancer as the symptoms don’t typically manifest until the patient reaches the later stages of the cancer.

Conventionally, mesothelioma cancer treatment involves chemotherapy or irradiation therapy. Chemotherapy makes use of drugs to shrink the tumors and destroy the cancerous cells in the body that are spreading the infection. Radiation therapy aims to do just that with the exception that it uses high-energy x-rays for this purpose. Mesothelioma cancer treatment in the advanced stages of this cancer can't cure the disease; only prolong the life of the patient.

While irradiation therapy and chemotherapy are the more conventional forms of mesothelioma cancer treatment there are some new ones that have come up that offer hope to patients. They are:

  • Immunotherapy – the body’s own immune system attacks the cancerous cells and destroys them.
  • Gene Therapy – In this mesothelioma cancer treatment a gene is injected into the tumour, which makes it doable for the antiviral drug glanciclovir to act against the cancerous cells.
  • Photodynamic Therapy – This form of mesothelioma cancer treatment uses light to attack and destroy the cancerous cells in the body.

These experimental forms of mesothelioma cancer treatment, though still under research, offer cancer victims a shot at a longer and superior life. As research into mesothelioma cancer continues, more forms of treatment are sure to be discovered.
